What does being a police officer involve?A Police Officer's job is to maintain law and order
in the community. Our job involves many different tasks which may include such
things as - attending burglaries, sudden deaths, fights, disorder accidents, and
road safety. We also attend major events such as concerts and sports games, so
our job is very diverse. Why did you decide you wanted to be a police officer?Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to join the Police force. I wanted a job that offered variety, and that I could help people in some way. Was there any other job you ever seriously considered?I did seriously think of maybe becoming a teacher. What study and qualifications did you have to get to become a police officer?You have to be able to pass the Police entrance test. To do this you would need to have a high standard of English and Maths at school. You also need to have current certificates in first aid, swimming, defensive driving and be of a high fitness. What other skills do you need to be a police officer?You need good people skills as you deal with such a huge variety of people. You need to be a good mediator, be able to resolve conflict, be a good team member, give advice, ask for advice and deal compassionately with victims. What is the best thing about the job?You never know what your job may entail each
day, and the police is like having a second family. What is the hardest thing about the job? Telling someone that their
loved one has died. What hours do you work?Currently I am doing mainly day shift, which is 8am to 4pm. I am working in Police Education, which means I spend most of my days teaching programme's in schools. Do
you find you have the time to do other things you enjoy? Is it hard to get a good
work/life balance?
Yes - I am lucky because I am a dayshift worker I still get to have all my nights and weekends free. It is very important to have other hobbies/interest outside work. What advice would you have for girls out there who might be thinking of becoming a police officer?To get a good education, keep fit and keep out of trouble.
