Connecting across the miles

We have a son living in Pennsylvania USA, and when we visit every few years, we get to know friends and neighbours.

Our son then shifted, and during our visit last year were drove past his old house hoping to catch neighbours Gail and Larry, but the house was all locked up –obviously on holiday.

May 22 I received a letter from GirlGuiding NZ. It was dated February 22. There was an apology for the three month delay, as the letter was found on the floor at National Office on a brief return to the building after the earthquake - it hadn’t made the mail on the day it was written!

Gail, in Pennsylvania, had searched the web and found me on a Guiding site picking daffodils for Daffodil Day. She emailed GirlGuiding NZ for my contact details.

I joined Trefoil Guild before the days of emails but my postal address was on file and Jeannie Moeller was kind enough to pass on the email from USA.

I contacted Gail and Larry – they have booked on a cruise around NZ in November. When they finish the cruise in Auckland, they have booked to fly to New Plymouth for 3 days to visit us – they arrive Nov 22nd.

Thanks Jeannie - we look forward to showing them some of Taranaki.

Matariki at Merrilands

Matariki 01Merrilands Brownies took part in the Term 2 2011 Cultural Challenge.

We invited a very knowledgable Maori parent to assist us with the night and included clauses for the ‘Here n There’ unit badge. We discussed matariki and about Maori life and traditions including what happens when someone is welcomed on to a marae and what life is like on a marae. We also looked at a model of a marae, tried a traditional Maori craft - carving (on soaps) - and played a Ti Rakau (stick game) before singing taps in Maori.

The girls really enjoyed learning about Maori culture and are looking forward to Term 3’s Challenge.
