East-West Canterbury

Easter Egg Hunt

Region Events 2013

Shut Eye Brownie Camp

It all began on a cloudy Friday night. For dinner we had pizza. The flavours we were having – hawaiian, meat lovers and chicken and cranberry. The hawaiian and meat lovers were all eaten up but no one ate the chicken and cranberry. Next we washed our dishes and put up our stretchers. I looked out the window - it was
growing darker.

After that we got ready to go and play spotlight. We lined up in biggest to smallest, first me, Pippa and Georgia were the first to be in at spotlight. We had two rounds of it. Next we watched Basil the Detective. I sat beside Kayla and we shared popcorn. After that we went to bed.

In the morning we got dressed and put down our stretchers. We had a really yummy breakfast that we cooked ourselves. After breakfast we washed our dishes then it was time to go home.

It was fun.

Lorax 9 - Brownie Regional Camp

On Friday evening 61 Brownies arrived at Glenroy for the East-West Canterbury Regional Brownie Camp. After finding which bunk room everyone was staying in and unpacking bags the girls all settled down in their PJs to watch the original Lorax movie. A quick game and supper and it was 9pm and time to head off to bed.

On Saturday the girls moved around four round robin activity areas:

  • Slip sliding in the Grickle Grass,
  • Crafty Lorax Critters
  • Brownies Conservation
  • Trails outside Thneedville.

Activities included grass skiing and tobogganing, flying fox, truffula tree pencils and cupcakes, recycled paper making, kiwi pictures for the Term Challenge, making a bird feeder and making a nature mobile.

After dinner everyone rugged up warm and went on a night hike and then came back for campfire. Each ‘six’ group had prepared an item and it was great to see everyone participating. Smores over the campfire and supper ended the evening.

Sunday was clean up then Brownie’s Own before a sausage sizzle lunch - cooked by the girls themselves.

It was a fantastic camp and the girls had the opportunity to complete seven Challenge 9 clauses towards the badge, plus five other clauses for specialised badges and the Term Challenge.

Abseiling here we come!

abseiling01In February twenty excited keen girls bubbling with enthusiasm headed to the abseiling tower at Cracroft.

The tension and nerves were high as the girls stared in awe at the height of the tower. Many comments were passed, apprehension shared along with a bit of bravado too!

Before too many girls had time to think the first group were harnessed up, safety briefed and sent into the heights of the tower.

abseiling02The first girl down had an amazing sense of achievement, her enthusiasm bubbled over as she buzzed with adrenalin. This was passed onto the others and before we knew it the majority of the girls had conquered the almighty tower.

Our last group of girls were a bit more apprehensive. Their desire to achieve was impressive and eventually with loads of encouragement and support these girls also managed the challenge.

From a leader’s perspective it was awesome giving the girls a challenge and then being part of their success. This was a real buzz for me. I would like to express a huge thanks to the abseiling crew and Nathan. It is great to see a big group of leaders out there training! Ka Pai and thanks for a great adventure!
