Recycling for conservation
Kaikoura Guide Club (Pippins and Brownies) had a busy time collecting rubbish and recycling for the GirlGuiding NZ Term 3 conservation challenge!

On
Thursday 25 August we set off with latex gloves and plastic bags in
small groups of five to six girls with an adult helper. We worked in the
Kaikoura Primary School (pretty clean in there really – ka pai!) and
then headed over to Takahanga Domain where we collected a huge
assortment of materials.
These included shoes (not matching), jersey, pants, underwear and a t-shirt as well as the normal collection of packets, bottles, containers, wrappers etc. We then walked up the postman’s cutting to the recycling centre where we deposited our collection for Andy’s workers to work through on Friday and we had a good look around the centre. Andy had lots of information for us about reducing, reusing and recycling materials.
We collected 16kg of rubbish/recycling and of this 80% was able to be recycled. We had an article in the Kaikoura Star about it too which is cool!

Wairau Brownies go camping at Avonlea
We
went to Avonlea which is out in the beautiful Waihopai Valley . It took
about an hour to get there but it was beautiful scenery all the way
there.
Jo and her husband Bernie came out and met us, then Jo took us around and showed us where we were allowed to go. Then we went back to camp and helped unload the trailer so we could put the tents up…. There was a competition to see which group could put the tents up the quickest. It was fun racing with the others but we all got a reward for trying.
Bernie
brought over a little black duckling for us to pet. We had tea and
played a few games then went to bed – most of us talked for hours. We
were woken at 3.30am both mornings by what was nearly our leader’s
breakfast! They were going to find where the roosters were, push them
off their perches and have them for breakfast on Sunday but were too
tired and too busy. We all blew a sigh of relief.
Jo
was nice. She told us some of the history of the 100 year old lodge and
showed us how to make felt. That was so much fun it took us ages. We
had made big hats and they were judged. Louise wanted to give us all
first prize. All of us ended up getting prizes anyway for trying so
hard.
At
the campfire we sang lots of cool songs. Then we made “s’mores” with
chocolate biscuits. MMMM. yummy. On Sunday we made Christmas decorations
with pipe cleaners and beads. They are really nice. Then after we had
taken the tents down and cleaned up, we had a yummy lunch that we made
ourselves. Then we went home really tired. And Tania passed her
assessment. Now she can take us camping any time.
