Activities for Brownies

How much water is there in food?

  • Peel a potato and cut it into slices
  • Weigh all the pieces together.
  • Put them in a warm place or a dehydrator until they are completely dry.
  • Weigh them again.
  • How much weight has been lost? [This is the amount of water the potato contained].

Try this experiment with other foods.

Spring time outdoor challenge

Go outside and find –

  1. A bird on a tree
  2. A fantail flittering among the branches
  3. A blossom tree with the petals falling – stand under it
  4. Tiny plants growing between rocks and stones
  5. Some baby birds
  6. Something as soft as Santa’s beard
  7. A bud of a tree, either a leaf or a flower bud
  8. A spider web covered in dew

Whirl Around [a ball game from Syria]

All you will need is a tennis ball.

The idea is to bounce the ball and then spin around once before catching it.

Give yourself a point each time you catch the ball.

Aboriginal Finger Painting

Dot painting is a form of art used by the Australian Aborigines to tell stories and record their history. You may like to create a picture about something in your life.

You will need –

  •   brightly coloured liquid paints
  •   a match stick, skewer
  •   paper or card
  •   damp cloth
  1. With the end of a match stick or skewer, or you may like to use the tip of a finger, dip your finger in the paint to create a picture by using dots to make the picture instead of lines.
  2. When changing colour wipe the end of the ‘dotter’ with a damp cloth so as not to mix colours.

Hot Dog

Cook your own hot dog.

You will need –

  • empty clean milk carton
  • hot dog [pre cooked]
  • bread roll
  • any trimmings eg mustard, tomato sauce, grated cheese
  • matches
  • bucket of water for any emergency

Split bread roll lengthways and place hot dog inside. Wrap in tinfoil. [Be sure to put the shiny side inwards.] Place the wrapped hot dog into the milk carton and stand in a safe place for burning. Carefully set the carton alight at the top and watch your carton burn up. Use tongs to turn the carton so that it burns completely. Use tongs to pick up the hot dog. Add trimmings as required and enjoy.

Design a pair of Glasses

You will need –

  • recycled card
  • coloured paper
  • sparkly things
  • narrow elastic
  • bright feathers
  • wool
  • cellophane
  • glue
  • pens
  • scissors

Design and make some outrageous glasses that you can wear to a party or celebration, or just make them for fun.
