Aotearoa

Aotearoa units provide the GirlGuiding programme and activities to those girls who can't attend a local unit, for whatever reason.

What is the Aotearoa Team?

The Aotearoa Team is a nation-wide region which is made up of units who deliver GirlGuiding in a different way. Girls don’t attend regular unit meetings at a venue, instead they do their girl programme in other ways.

How do girls receive programmes?

Our units may use a variety of methods to deliver programmes – including posting resources in the mail, sending emails, programmes on the internet, texting and other social media. The unit leaders discuss with families the best ways to deliver the programme for their circumstances.

Why do girls join the Aotearoa Team?

There are many and varied reasons why girls join the Aotearoa Team units rather than a local unit:

  • Girls might live some distance from the nearest unit
  • They may have other activities on the night that the local unit meets
  • Girls might be at boarding school
  • They might be on the waiting list for the local unit and this is a way to be involved to start earning badges

Whatever the reason, the Aotearoa Team is happy to support girls to participate and should circumstances change, it’s easy to transfer from the Aotearoa Team unit to a regular unit.

How do girls join the Aotearoa Team?

It’s easy to join an Aotearoa Team Unit, whether the girl is new to Guiding, or transferring or linking from a regular Unit.

Buddy Units

Girls in Aotearoa Team units are buddied with a local unit, so that they have the opportunity to participate in local events, such as activity days and camps. The aim of this buddying programme is to give our girls the best of both worlds, and encourage opportunities for local contact and participation in group activities.
